On a cold and blustery wintery Brisbane evening 16 members graced us with their presence .
Guest - Hermann, an 'awesome sculptor' joined us for the evening, and as it turns out, was a former member of BMM from over 10 years ago. Hermann was so impressed by us that he signed up to become a member by the end of the meeting.
Apologies from DavidF, Murray and the Joys
Film Bite - The Final Duel
Michael opened the meeting with a showing of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - The Final Duel (1966) which combines and juxtaposes extreme close ups with long shots and suspenseful music with minimal dialog that runs for nearly 10 minutes which cemented The Good, the Bad and the Ugly in the genre of Spaghetti Westerns.
After the script
The former teacher in Peter came out when he broke us up into pairs to come up with a list of things we should do and be mindful of when producing a movie/film. After a discussion in which we were invited to share our notes, Peter took us along his personal journey of his experience in producing his movies, and true to form as a member of BMM, had created a short video of his top 7 considerations when making a movie. He concluded his presentation with a 'no-talent' reel from his outtakes of 'The Lady Beetles' featuring Glenn, Nigel and himself. We should definitely stick to our day jobs.
The Return of the King
Brendon King, that is. DavidW's mate and producer of Eternity is visiting Brisbane again on business. DavidW indicated Brendon might be up for another BMM catch-up. Details to follow. We then broke for a short supper with a couple of bottles of plonk courtesy of Brendon's previous visit. Thank you DavidW.
My Journey as a filmmaker
DavidF was unable to attend the meeting so Freddie-Lee gave us an update of his private film work where he's been gaffing and lighting. The first is on the set of Bloodiest Ambition which is akin to a millenials view of MacBeth and the second was Third Space, which is 'The Office' with a love triangle. The days were longish at 11 hours over 3 day shoots, but Freddie-Lee has been enjoying his time on set because of the camaraderie of the company Unpacked Media. Freddie-Lee has also been involved in another 48 Hour film challenge 'Drive Me Crazy' that debuts in a theatre either on 31 July or 1 August.
Tweed Caldera
Paul entertained us yet again with his third instalment in his series of Gondwana Australia. Where his previous productions looked into the flora and fauna aspects, this instalment focussed on The Tweed Valley which was at the epicentre of a volcanic eruption that created the valley. Shot over 4 separate visits with drone footage courtesy of the piloting skills of our very own Glenn, I am sure that you will agree that Tweed Caldera - Born of Fire is another captivating and thoroughly enjoyable production from Paul.
Script-writing competition - and the winner is...
Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, the judges had only submitted their reviews just hours before the 18 July meeting, meaning it was not possible to tabulate the results, so the announcement will be held over to the next meeting, 1 August.
Membership Renewals
Sadly, the club has lost a handful of members who have elected not to renew membership for 2024-25. May they find their way back to us one day like Hermann did, but hopefully it doesn't take a decade.
AGM
The club's Financials have been audited and returned. The AGM will proceed as planned on 15 August and is expected to run for only 30 minutes, to be followed by the general club meeting. The secretary is currently being underwhelmed with nominations from the membership.
