Apologies from Paul, Damian and Pamela
We welcomed back our guest Leonie who has decided to join BMM. Welcome Leonie.
Film bite (Stewart)
The 15 members who were present got to see an abridged version of Peter Jackson's 'They Shall Not Grow Old' which features WW1 footage and images restored from the BBC archives and the Imperial War Museum. Using modern technology and restoration techniques available, he was able to remove grain, clean up images, correct frame rate issues, crop, add colourisation, lift/reduce exposure and reframe shots. In one sequence, he added audio to an originally silent segment that featured a pep talk commonly given to the troops. He started with 600 hours of audio and 100 hours of vision.
Commercialising Videos in YouTube (Glenn)
Glenn presented his own video on what factors are involved in the commercialisation of content on YouTube. He then followed it up by showing 2 success stories from YouTube content creators:

Planning & the Future of BMM (Neal & Jenn)
Neal's out of hospital and on the mend and is now sporting technology that links with his mobile phone to monitor his health in real time
Neal presented his thoughts on what the future holds for clubs like ours and the movie making industry in general. Here are his summarised points:
Technological innovations, particularly content streaming, are causing theatre screens to close. DVD sales and theatre attendance are down 80% as a result.
The once dominant filmmaking mecca of Hollywood is unable to compete with the globalisation of film making.
Through the power of CGI and technologies such as Unreal Engine, virtual sets have replaced physical sets, reducing lead times and set construction costs.
Traditional videography techniques and equipment are becoming obsolete, with Gen Z embracing Smartphones and social media technologies to upload 2.4 million hours of content DAILY, with 720,000 hours on YouTube alone! You read that right.
The technology is not only getting smaller, but it is getting better and better with 4k cameras no bigger than a match box, with crisp imagery, excellent exposure, ease of use and built in stabilisation to boot.
Artificial Intelligence is on the horizon and emerging in SmartPhones already with magic removal capabilities.
We are aware of AI being used to create an actor's digital likeness (Peter Cushing (Star Wars) Paul Walker (Fast and Furious 7)) or make them look older or younger (Tom Hanks in Here), and editing software coming soon to you will be benefiting from creating content to extend scenes that were not actually shot i.e. the director stopped rolling the camera prematurely!
The content has changed, the storytelling has changed, the audience has changed, the delivery has changed. BMM as a video production, content creation and movie making club has to adapt to remain relevant
Thanks Neal for sharing your thoughts
After a short cuppa break, Jenn ran a session to collect input from members of what they wanted from the club and what they were able to contribute. This will be played back along with a few other ideas at the next meeting by Glenn on 6th March 2025
Meeting Venue Update
Nigel delivered a short presentation on an evolving situation concerning our meeting venue, with IndroHall management requesting that we go from being their members to hall hirers from 1 July 2025. A Special General Meeting will be held on 6 March 2025 at 7:30PM~7:45PM which includes a simple and short voting session, which will be followed by our normal meeting. The notice, context and resolutions have been sent out on 27 February 2025 to all members and also includes a proxy form.
Going Shopping (Hermann)
Unfortunately the meeting went well into overtime and were unable to show Hermann's Going Shopping movie. Sorry Hermann, we will show it at the next meeting!
